It broke our hearts last year when several mothers came to our offices a week into the school year to ask for assistance. The month starts on September 15 because 5 Latin American Countries declared their independence on September 15, 1821. The Countries are Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico, Chile, and Belize celebrate their independence on September 16, September 18 and September 21 respectively.
