On August 22, CFC hosted a Health Fair in conjunction with the YMCA. Nearly 400 people visited LINC Mission Center to learn about community resources for health care, get a blood pressure check, get back to school hair cuts for kids and some even got backpacks with school supplies.

Thank you to all the staff, volunteers and community members for help in this back to school event at LINC Mission Center (Sept. 22nd, 2009). At this successful event we had 30 organizations providing information about safety and crime prevention and health screenings like blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, and vision. Organizations were present with information about alcohol abuse prevention, adult education and other helpful information. We also gave free haircuts for the boys and distributed school supplies; but, more important, we shared Jesus's Love with this community service.

Days before the official registration date, people began calling about the ESL classes. Lone Star College and the YMCA are partnering with Centro Familiar Cristiano to offer the classes at the LINC Mission Center on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Plans were made to accommodate 100 students but due to the number of people who responded, there are 4 classes of 35 people each, 140 students! And a waiting list -

What a great opportunity for Pastor Lincon to share Jesus through this community outreach.

On August 30, St. Andrew congregation and Hilltop Church of Houston celebrated the Korean congregation's first year anniversary with a joint, bilingual worship service and Holy Communion followed by a fellowship lunch. What a celebration it was! Hilltop provided the meal and arranged seating so that the two congregations could continue to mingle during the meal.

The congregations will return to their usual worship times but were unanimous in their desire to worship together for special occasions. Hilltop Church of Houston is LINC's second congregation to become a chartered LCMS congregation. Their pastor, Seungwoong Ok is preparing for ordination through Concordia Seminary's Colloquy program.

Stand with others for immigration reform.  LIRS has created a new campaign called Stand for Welcome.  LINC encourages its supporters to get involved in the of issue immigration reform.  We are called as God's people to welcome the stranger.

Houses get major repairs as part of Lutheran coalition

The houses of three East End area homeowners recently received major repairs recently, thanks to the Lutheran Inter-city Network Coalition, an initiative to help needy families rebuild after Hurricane Ike.

“Our whole goal is to get a house back to where it is safe, secure and clean; where it is as livable as before,” said Mark Junkans, executive director of LINC Houston.

Volunteers scraped off old roof shingles, while others cleaned up the debris.
Volunteers and crews are continuing to work on the homes to remediate mold and replace Sheetrock.
“All three homeowners were grateful and amazed at the volunteers, who had given up their Saturday to come out and help,” said Julie Reid, spokeswoman for LINC, whose offices are at 161 West Road. “It turned out to be a great day.”

Centro Familiar Cristiano, a LINC Hispanic ministry led by Pastor Lincon Guerra, held a marriage workshop in April 2009 for the couples of the church and community.  This event was organized by Jorge y Vianey, coordinators for the women's and men's ministry of the congregation.  There was biblical teaching about marriage, activities and a romantic meal.

The Greater Houston Long Term Recovery Committee, of which LINC is a part, organized a workday on Saturday January 24th to repair 3 homes.  Many organizations were represented, along with individual volunteers from the Houston community.

Together, we tore off Ike damaged roofs and almost finished replacing them with new shingles.  Materials were purchased with grant money given by Home Depot through LISC.  Everyone worked hard and had fun.  Thank you to everyone who participated.

LINC Houston was selected to receive a grant for $25,000 from LCMS World Relief and Human Care.  These funds will help some of our ministry staff pay the deductible on their insurance claims, repair storm damage to LINC property and also to continue our efforts to coordinate volunteer and clean up efforts for the region.
